Costa Rica Rio Negro is a natural process coffee with a rich, fruit-forward sweetness. Mixed berries and light rum up front, settling into smooth milk chocolate as it cools. It drinks like a coffee that knows exactly what it's doing, layered and easy to come back to.
Hacienda Rio Negro sits at Costa Rica's southern border with Panama in the Coto Brus region. The farm was founded in 1955 by Luis Wachong Lee, a Chinese immigrant who ran it into the 1990s. In 2001, Rio Negro became the first farm in Costa Rica to earn Rainforest Alliance certification. For most of its history, the farm has focused on washed coffees. This lot is their first natural process coffee brought to market, and it's a strong debut. The natural processing brings out a berry sweetness and body that their washed lots don't typically show.
If you liked our Bali Kintamani, this one's in that neighborhood. Try it as a shot of espresso where the berry sweetness and rum notes really concentrate, or brew it on a pour over and let the milk chocolate finish open up.
