This outstanding coffee comes from the Nyamasheke District, nestled on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rwanda’s Western Province. Grown at high altitudes in rich volcanic soil, it reflects the care and craftsmanship of local farmers. Milled at the Rwamatamu washing station and further processed in Kigali, this coffee is truly a labor of love.

This lot was named "Hirwa" or "be blessed" by the family that runs Rwamatamu. We were introduced to Bernice and her family through Sean Stewart at Bridging Tables, who Ellen & Alison met while sitting their Q Grader exams. Bridging Tables is a newer importing company that exists to connect farmers and roasters to have a more collaborative approach to green coffee buying. We are so excited to have the opportunity to talk personally with Bernice, and to have even more direct trade with her family's farm in future years.

Hirwa is a hand-sorted peaberry coffee, offering a captivating balance of sweetness and complexity. Peaberries, a rare mutation found in only 5-10% of coffee cherries, are known for their round shape and vibrant flavor profile. With juicy orange, sweet chocolate, and delicate floral notes, it’s no surprise that many coffee enthusiasts believe peaberries deliver a more intense and refined experience.

This coffee shines as a pour-over, and by experimenting with different brewing methods, you’ll discover a range of unique flavors that emerge as the cup cools. It’s a coffee that evolves, offering new layers of enjoyment with every sip.
