A delicate, tea-like cup leads the way in this hand-sorted Peaberry lot, Rwanda Rwamatamu. This coffee brings notes of Earl Grey tea, panela sugar, and cocoa nibs which create a balance of bright citrus, soft sweetness, and gentle chocolate depth. Peaberries occur naturally in only about 5–10% of coffee cherries, where a single round bean forms instead of the usual two. Many coffee drinkers find peaberries to have deeper sweetness and more vibrant acidity.
This coffee is grown in Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District, overlooking Lake Kivu in the country’s Western Province. After harvest, the cherries are milled at the Rwamatamu washing station before being transported to Kigali for final dry milling. The region’s elevation, climate, and careful processing contribute to the clarity and structure found in the cup.
This year’s release is particularly exciting! The Rwamatamu farm placed second in the Best of Rwanda National Specialty Coffee Competition, highlighting the exceptional quality coming from this producer. They named this lot "Hirwa" which means “be blessed,” reflecting the experience they hope people have while enjoying this coffee.
In honor of that, we recommend manual brewing to truly let it shine. A V60 highlights its clarity and aromatics especially well, though experimenting with different recipes can bring out different notes. Let it cool and you may be surprised how the flavors continue to evolve over time.
